Doctrine NAF-∞ · Ratified In Perpetuity

The Non-Furry Manifesto

I will not be made to apologize for owning a cat, for wearing glasses, or for the crime of being green.

Preamble · Read Aloud, Standing, Hand Over Heart

One man. One cat. Infinite accusations.

They came with their squinting and their pointing. They saw a drawing of a cat with round glasses and they decided, without trial, without evidence, without so much as a single tail, that here was a furry in hiding.

This document exists because I am tired of being polite about it. What follows is not a defense. A defense implies a charge with merit. What follows is a declaration, and you will read every article of it.

I

The Cat Is A Cat.

Let us begin where all sane conversations begin. The cat is a cat. It is not a "fursona." It is not an "OC." It is not a costume zipped over a man with a fan in the head. It is a cat, in the way that a tree is a tree and water is wet, and no amount of squinting will reorganize the periodic table of my soul.

I drew a cat because I like cats. This is the entire mystery. There is no second layer. There is no hidden door behind the bookshelf. You have walked into an empty room and announced you found a cult.

II

A Color Is Not A Confession.

The cat is green. I am told this is suspicious. I am told that "real" cats are not green, as if I am unaware, as if I have never once met a cat, as if the green were a slip of the tongue under interrogation rather than a deliberate aesthetic choice made by a person who simply enjoys the color.

Green is a frequency of visible light. It is the color of spring, of money, of go-signals, of a great many things that have nothing whatsoever to do with conventions, suits, or tails. A color cannot testify against me. A color does not know what I do on weekends. The accusation rests on the chromatic, and the chromatic has no standing in this court.

III

Glasses Are For Seeing.

The cat wears round glasses. I, too, wear round glasses. This is the part where the accuser leans back, satisfied, as though they have cracked the case wide open. They have not. They have observed that I have a face and that I would like to see out of it.

Glasses correct vision. That is the totality of their function. They are not a wink. They are not a secret handshake rendered in acetate. Millions of people wear round glasses and the overwhelming majority of them are simply nearsighted, and I will not have my astigmatism entered into evidence.

IV

A Tail On A Drawing Does Not Transfer.

Even if the cat had a tail, and I am not conceding that it does, the tail would belong to the drawing. Anatomy depicted is not anatomy possessed. By this logic every person who has ever sketched a horse owns hooves, and every child who drew the sun is currently on fire.

Ink does not bind itself to the spine of the artist. I have rendered many things I do not personally have, including patience.

The Cat. Is Just. A Cat.

★ This Statement Has Been Verified 0.00% Furry ★
V

The Burden Of Proof Is On The Accuser.

I have been asked to prove I am not a furry. Consider, for a moment, the absurdity of the request. One cannot prove a negative by listing the infinite things one is not. I am also not a lighthouse, a notary, or the king of Belgium, and yet nobody demands an affidavit.

The accuser arrives empty-handed and expects me to fill their hands. No. Bring the suit. Bring the convention badge. Bring one (1) verifiable tail. Until then, the charge is vapor, and I do not negotiate with vapor.

You made the claim. You carry it. I will be over here, with my cat, who is a cat.

VI

I Contain Zero (0) Tails.

Let the record show, in numerals so that no clever soul may misread the spelling, that the quantity of tails currently attached to my person is zero. Not "a small tail." Not "a tail on weekends." Zero. Nil. The empty set.

I have audited myself in a mirror. I have asked a trusted friend. I have, in a moment of true desperation, checked. There is nothing back there but the ordinary back of an ordinary man, and the back of an ordinary man is admissible.

VII

The PNG Is Not A Suit.

The image you keep gesturing at is a PNG. It is pixels. It has an alpha channel, not a head vent. It does not zip. It does not need cooling. It cannot attend a meetup because it is a file, and files do not RSVP.

A picture of a cat is not a fursuit any more than a photograph of soup will fill your bowl. The medium is flat. The accusation is somehow flatter.

VIII

Liking An Animal Is The Default Human Condition.

Humans have adored animals since the cave wall. We put them on flags, on currency, on the front of cereal boxes, on the shoulder of every team in every sport ever invented. The mascot is older than writing. If affection for an animal were a confession, then history itself would be in the dock beside me.

I like cats specifically because they are dignified, indifferent, and they do not accuse me of anything. I am asking only to be extended the same courtesy as a cat.

It Is A Drawing. Of A Cat.

IX

The Accusation Says More About You.

Curious, is it not, that you looked at a green cat in glasses and your mind sprinted, unprompted, to an entire subculture. I drew a cat. You brought everything else to the table. You set the table. You lit the candles.

I make no judgment of where your imagination travels. I only note, gently, for the record, that I was not the one driving.

X

I Reject The Conviction By Vibes.

There is a modern epidemic of the verdict-by-feeling, the sentence handed down because something "gives off a certain energy." I will not be convicted by vibes. Vibes are not evidence. Vibes do not appear in the discovery file. You cannot subpoena a vibe.

Show me the document. Show me the receipt. Show me a single thing that is not a feeling you had while looking at a cartoon, and I will read it carefully and then I will still not be a furry, because I am not one.

XI

Anthropomorphism Is Just Art.

Yes, the cat stands upright. Yes, it wears glasses. So does the lion on the cereal box, the mouse who built an empire, the tiger selling you breakfast, and roughly every children's book published since the invention of the printing press. A talking animal is the single most normal thing in the entire history of pictures.

If standing a cat on two legs is a confession, then the entire animation industry should be reading this manifesto from a holding cell. I will save them a seat. There will be no seat needed, because the charge is nonsense.

XII

My Wardrobe Contains No Surprises.

I invite the accuser to inventory my closet. They will find shirts. They will find trousers. They will find a coat for the rain and exactly the number of socks one would expect, minus the few the dryer has claimed. They will find nothing with a snout.

There is no costume. There is no head in a box on a high shelf. The most exotic item I own is a slightly too-loud sweater, and even that has been forgiven by everyone present.

XIII

Repetition Does Not Make It True.

You have said it once. You have said it twice. You have said it in the group chat with a screenshot and three crying-laughing faces. The volume has increased; the truth has not. A lie told a thousand times is simply a lie that is now tired.

I could be accused every hour, on the hour, for the rest of my natural life, and the cat would remain a cat, the glasses would remain medical, and the tail count would remain at its proud and permanent zero.

Zero Tails. Forever.

XIV

I Do Not Object To Furries. I Object To Inaccuracy.

Let this be perfectly, gloriously clear: I have no quarrel with furries. They seem to be having a far better time than the people accusing me. My objection is not moral. My objection is factual. I am being mislabeled, and I am a person who alphabetizes his spices.

It is the inaccuracy that wounds me. Call me anything that is true. Call me stubborn, call me a man who has written fourteen articles about a cartoon, call me someone with too much time. All accurate. Just do not call me a thing I am not.

XV

This Case Is Closed. It Was Never Open.

There is no case. There was never a case. A case requires a crime and there is no crime in drawing a cat, in wearing glasses, in the unremarkable act of being a person who likes a color. The file marked NAF-∞ exists only because someone insisted on a file, and I am a thorough man.

I rest a defense I should never have had to mount. The cat is a cat. The glasses are for seeing. The tail count is zero. Court adjourned, with prejudice, with feeling, with a green cat watching from the windowsill, indifferent as ever.

I Am Not. A Furry.

Say it louder For the people in the back

The Pledge

If you have read this far, you are now a witness. Raise your right hand, or at least your eyebrow, and pledge the following:

  1. I have looked upon the cat, and I find that it is, in fact, a cat.
  2. I accept that a color is not a confession and that green is simply nice.
  3. I understand that glasses exist to correct vision and for no covert reason.
  4. I acknowledge the verified, permanent, architecturally stable tail count of zero (0).
  5. I will, henceforth, point at a drawing of a cat and say, calmly, "that is a cat."
  6. Should I forget, I will return to this manifesto and read it again, aloud, standing.
I accept: the cat is just a cat

Doctrine ratified. Read the ruling.

The manifesto stands. Now see it confirmed in cold, official numbers, or take the inevitable next step and ask your remaining questions.
