THE EVIDENCE LOCKER

Every clue logged, bagged, tagged, dusted, photographed, cross-referenced, and conclusively debunked. The exhibits below were collected lawfully by the Department of Definitely Not. They all say the same thing: it is a cat.

The State Of The Evidence

ONE CAT. EXAMINED.

The prosecution presents one (1) green cartoon cat wearing round glasses. The defense presents the following rebuttal: it is a cat. We rest. We then un-rest, because apparently this requires forty more exhibits.

What follows is the complete forensic record. Each item has been entered into evidence, examined under magnification, dusted for fursuit fiber, swabbed for convention adhesive, and returned to the locker stamped NON-FURRY. No item has ever been returned otherwise. There is no otherwise. There is only the cat, and the cat is just a cat.

The investigation has now consumed three forensic technicians, one notary, an unreasonable quantity of red string, and a junior tech who is still recovering from the greenness incident. At no point did anyone find anything. Finding nothing, repeatedly, at great expense, is the central achievement of this dossier. We are proud of it. The cat remains a cat.

We pinned every photograph to the board and connected them with red string, the way real investigators do. The string forms no pattern. The string never forms a pattern. The cat is, in all directions, a cat.

UNDER MAGNIFICATION

We placed the official profile picture under the lab scanner. Hover to intensify the crosshairs. Every callout below was drafted by a licensed examiner who would very much like to stop being asked about this.

EXHIBIT NAF-002 The profile picture under forensic scan
The Ears (top, two of them) Biological. Attached. Drawn directly onto the head with no visible seam, zipper, or velcro. These are cat ears because this is a cat. A costume would unzip. Nothing here unzips.
The Glasses (round, center) For seeing. That is the entire function of glasses. The lenses are corrective, not thematic. No fandom is encoded in the frames. The cat simply has astigmatism, allegedly.
The Color (green, all over) A color. Specifically #53FB9B. Green is a color a thing can be. The greenness of the cat is documented, stable, and legally irrelevant to the question of furriness.
The Tail (rear, if present in frame) Belongs to the drawn cat. Non-transferable. Cannot be removed and worn. Cannot be clipped to a belt. It is part of the illustration the way the ears are. Drawn things have tails. This is permitted.
The Eyes (two dots, central) Rendered as simple dots. Simple dots are the lowest-effort eye a drawing can have. A furry would commission expressive, semi-realistic, gradient-shaded eyes with catchlights. These are two dots. Two dots are the eyes of a man who wanted a profile picture and stopped thinking about it.
The Chest Fluff (lower frame, if rendered) A small triangle of lighter shading where a cat's chest would be. This is anatomy, not fashion. It zips into nothing. It removes for no occasion. The fluff has never attended an event. It cannot. It is paint.
The Pose (neutral, forward-facing) Subject faces the camera in a flat, neutral, ID-photo posture. No paws-up. No finger guns. No head tilt of community significance. This is the pose of a passport. Passports are not furry. The cat is sitting for a passport.
The File (a PNG, 1:1) The exhibit is a square raster image named not-furry.png. The filename, under forensic linguistics, constitutes a signed confession of innocence. We did not name it. It named itself. We are legally obligated to believe filenames.
Final Reading ONE (1) CAT. ZERO (0) FURSUITS. No costume, no convention badge, no commission receipt, no paws-up pose, no headpaw. Scan complete. The cat is just a cat.

THE EXHIBITS

Twenty-four clues the prosecution thought were damning. Twenty-four clues that were, on examination, a cat. Each card debunks one allegation. Hover to run the scan line. We ran out of compelling allegations around Exhibit F and kept going anyway, in the interest of completeness and spite.

EXHIBIT A
Exhibit A

The Animal Ears

Allegation: subject has ears like an animal. Finding: subject IS an animal (a cat). Cats have cat ears. This proves cat, not furry.

EXONERATING
EXHIBIT B
Exhibit B

The Anthropomorphism

Allegation: it wears glasses, which is a human thing. A cat in glasses is a cat with good eye care. Garfield wore none of this and nobody investigated him.

INADMISSIBLE
EXHIBIT C
Exhibit C

The Suspicious Greenness

Allegation: real cats are not green. Correct. This is a drawn cat. Drawn cats can be any color. The greenness is decorative, not incriminating.

IRRELEVANT
EXHIBIT D
Exhibit D

The Profile Picture Itself

Allegation: he uses a cat as his avatar. Yes. People use cat avatars. This is the single most common thing on the internet. CASE CLOSED.

EXHIBIT E
Exhibit E

The Whiskers

Allegation: prominent whiskers detected. Whiskers belong to the cat. They are not glued on for an event. They came with the cat. Whisker authenticity: confirmed.

EXONERATING
EXHIBIT F
Exhibit F

The Alleged Fur

Allegation: it appears furry. It is a flat illustration. There is no fur, only the IMPLICATION of fur via shading. You cannot pet a vector. Inadmissible.

INADMISSIBLE
EXHIBIT G
Exhibit G

The Cuteness

Allegation: it is too cute to be innocent. Cuteness is not a crime and is not on the furry checklist. Many non-furry things are cute. Moving on.

IRRELEVANT
EXHIBIT H
Exhibit H

The Tail Question

Allegation: where there is a cat there is a tail. The tail belongs to the drawing and is non-transferable. It cannot be detached, worn, or wagged at a meet. Drawn tail. Legal.

IRRELEVANT
EXHIBIT I
Exhibit I

The Lack Of A Receipt

Allegation: prove you DIDN'T commission a fursuit. We searched everywhere. There is no receipt because there is no suit. Absence of suit, confirmed.

EXONERATING
EXHIBIT J
Exhibit J

The Vibe

Allegation: the vibe is, you know, kind of furry. "Vibe" is not evidence. "Vibe" cannot be entered into the record. Stricken. The vibe is, in fact, cat.

INADMISSIBLE
EXHIBIT K
Exhibit K

The Repeated Use Of This Image

Allegation: he keeps posting the same cat. Loyalty to one avatar is the OPPOSITE of fursona-collecting behavior. One cat, used forever. CASE CLOSED.

CASE CLOSED
EXHIBIT L
Exhibit L

The Glasses, Again

Allegation: someone wants to re-examine the glasses. Re-examined. Still for seeing. Still corrective. Still not a fandom indicator. The cat is just a cat.

EXONERATING
EXHIBIT M
Exhibit M

The Dot Eyes

Allegation: the eyes are doing something. The eyes are two dots. Two dots are the eyes a person uses when they do not want to think about eyes. A fursona has lore in its eyes. This has dots.

INADMISSIBLE
EXHIBIT N
Exhibit N

The Chest Fluff

Allegation: there is fluff on the chest. The fluff is paint. The fluff has no zipper and attends no events. Cats have chests. This is where the chest is. Filed under anatomy, not apparel.

IRRELEVANT
EXHIBIT O
Exhibit O

The Neutral Pose

Allegation: the pose seems intentional. It is the pose of a passport photo. Forward-facing, unsmiling, civic. You do not get a fursona at the DMV. You get this. The pose is bureaucratic, not furry.

EXONERATING
EXHIBIT P
Exhibit P

The File Format

Allegation: examine the file itself. It is a PNG. PNGs are used by everyone for everything. The format encodes no fandom. There is no .furry extension. There never was. The file is just a file of a cat.

HEARSAY
EXHIBIT Q
Exhibit Q

The Filename

Allegation: the file is suspiciously named. The file is named not-furry.png. Under forensic linguistics this is a confession of innocence, signed by the file, admissible against the prosecution. CASE CLOSED.

CASE CLOSED
EXHIBIT R
Exhibit R

The Resolution

Allegation: the image is too small to be sure. We zoomed past the pixels. There is nothing in the pixels but more cat. A furry crime does not hide in low resolution. It hides in nowhere, because there is no crime.

IRRELEVANT
EXHIBIT S
Exhibit S

The Missing Convention Badge

Allegation: where is the lanyard. There is no lanyard. There is no badge. There is no laminated three-day pass. A furry has a badge. This cat has a face and nothing around its neck. The absence is exonerating.

EXONERATING
EXHIBIT T
Exhibit T

The Round Frames Specifically

Allegation: round glasses are a known fandom dog whistle. They are not. They are a known optician's product. Millions of humans wear round frames. The frames whistle at no one. They simply correct vision.

INADMISSIBLE
EXHIBIT U
Exhibit U

The Background (none)

Allegation: the background was scrubbed to hide something. The background is empty because empty backgrounds look clean. There is no convention hall blurred out behind the cat. There is nothing behind the cat. The cat needs no alibi.

IRRELEVANT
EXHIBIT V
Exhibit V

The Smile (faint)

Allegation: the cat looks pleased with itself. The cat is a drawing and cannot be pleased. The slight upturn is line work. Drawings do not have inner lives. This one has, at most, a mouth shaped like contentment. Not a crime.

HEARSAY
EXHIBIT W
Exhibit W

The Consistency Across Pages

Allegation: the same cat appears on every page of this site. Correct. We put it everywhere. That is what a brand is. Repetition is branding, not transformation. One cat, deployed twelve times, is still one cat. CASE CLOSED.

CASE CLOSED
EXHIBIT X
Exhibit X

The Fact That A Whole Site Exists

Allegation: only a guilty man builds a twelve-page defense. Or a deeply normal man with too much time and one cat picture. We have considered both. We chose the cat. The cat is just a cat, and so, regrettably, is the website.

Spectrographic Analysis · Wavelength By Wavelength

SPECTRAL READOUT

We passed the cat through the spectrometer one band at a time, expecting, at minimum, a single suspicious frequency. We found color. Color is what cats made of pixels are made of. Each band was logged and cleared.

Behavioral Observation Log · 72 Hours Of Surveillance

BEHAVIOR LOG

We surveilled the subject for three days, around the clock, hoping to catch a single furry behavior in the wild. The log below is complete. At no observed moment did the subject do anything other than be a normal person who has a cat for an avatar.

TimestampObserved BehaviorFurry?Notes
DAY 1 · 09:00made coffee, looked at a screenNOscreen contained code, not commissions
DAY 1 · 13:20used the cat avatar to post a tweetNOtweet was about deployment, not the fandom
DAY 1 · 19:45ate dinner like a humanNOused a fork, sat in a chair, no bowl on the floor
DAY 2 · 02:10still awake, debuggingNOsuspicious only to a sleep doctor
DAY 2 · 11:30opened the cat image in an editorFLAGGEDwas just resizing it for a favicon, cleared
DAY 2 · 16:05walked past a pet store, did not enterNOdid not even glance at the fish
DAY 3 · 08:15wore normal human clothesNOno tail hole observed in any garment
DAY 3 · 14:50built another page of this websiteNOconcerning use of time, not concerning use of species
DAY 3 · 23:59surveillance budget exhaustedNO72 hours, zero furry behaviors, one (1) cat picture
OBSERVATION NOTE: The single flag (DAY 2 · 11:30) was opening the cat image in an editor, which the lead analyst initially found "extremely suspicious," before learning the subject was making a favicon for this exact website. The flag was withdrawn. The behavior log is, in totality, a log of a person. The cat is just a cat.
Evidence Inventory · Sealed Locker Manifest

EVIDENCE INVENTORY

A full manifest of every item logged into the locker for case NAF-∞. Each item was bagged, numbered, and examined. The total count of incriminating items, after all of this, holds steady at zero.

  1. One (1) green cartoon cat, wearing round glasses, hereafter "the cat."
  2. One (1) PNG file, named not-furry.png, containing the cat.
  3. Two (2) ears, attached, unzippable, biological in the cartoon sense.
  4. Two (2) dots, serving as eyes, of the lowest available complexity.
  5. One (1) pair of corrective round glasses, for seeing, not for theming.
  6. One (1) set of whiskers, authenticated, belonging to the cat.
  7. One (1) patch of chest fluff, composed entirely of paint.
  8. One (1) tail (drawn, non-transferable, zero articulation joints).
  9. Zero (0) fursuits, despite an extremely thorough search.
  10. Zero (0) convention badges, lanyards, or three-day passes.
  11. Zero (0) commission receipts on file with any artist, ever.
  12. Zero (0) tails capable of being clipped to a belt and worn to a meet.
  13. One (1) website, twelve pages, dedicated to denying all of the above.
  14. One (1) deeply normal human, who simply likes the cat.
INVENTORY NOTE: Items 9 through 12 are the zeroes. They take up no space in the locker because they do not exist. We logged them anyway, so that the record would show, in writing, the precise quantity of evidence against the cat: none of it.
Forensic Analyst's Report · Final Draft

THE REPORT

Filed by Dr. R. Conclusion, Chief Analyst, Department of Definitely Not, forensic division. Reproduced here in full, unedited, as it appears in the sealed case file.

On the morning of Day 0 I was handed one square image of a green cat in round glasses and asked to determine, conclusively, whether the man who uses it is a furry. I have now spent three days, the entire forensic budget, and the patience of four colleagues answering that question. The answer is no.

I want to be precise about what we did, because the thoroughness is the only impressive part. We sequenced a genome. We dusted for paw prints. We ran the cat through every band of the electromagnetic spectrum, including one (microwave) that made no sense. We surveilled the subject for seventy-two consecutive hours and watched him make coffee, write code, and resize this exact image for a favicon. We read the filename out loud. At no point did we find a fursuit, a badge, a receipt, a paw, a foam head, or a single behavior that distinguishes the subject from any other person who happens to like a cat.

What we found, instead, is a man. A normal human man. He has astigmatism, presumably, which is why the cat has glasses. He has a sense of humor, which is why there is a twelve-page website. He has one avatar, which he has used loyally and without variation, the precise opposite of the avatar-collecting behavior the allegation requires. The cat is green because green is a color a drawn cat can be. None of this is furry. All of this is just a person with a cat picture.

My professional conclusion, signed and sealed, is as follows: the subject is a deeply ordinary human being who happens to have a cat for an avatar, and that cat, in every reading we are capable of taking, is just a cat. I do not expect to be asked about this again. I would like that very much to be true.
